Profile

In addition to scholarly literature on music, the Musicology Library also houses sheet music and a number of special collections. Since 2011, the Department of Musicology’s library has operated one of Germany’s largest archives of chansons with over 2000 CDs and about 20,000 French-language works. The Hahn Music Archive of Saarland (Saarländisches Musikarchiv Dr. Robert Hahn) contains an extensive collection of handwritten and printed materials covering the musical history of the Saar region in the 20th century. The collection is based on the private collection of the music teacher and critic Dr. Robert Hahn (1892–1974). A major holding in the archive is the AMEFA Karl Ristenpart Collection, which documents the role Ristenpart played in the musical life of Saarland.

The Musicology Library is areference library. This ensures that students and interested members of the public who wish to use our facilities for study or research have access to all items in the collections. The CDs and other audio recordings are available for on-site listening only. Private individuals are also welcome to use the library’s materials and resources.
